A veterinarian has offered a deeply moving glimpse into what might be going through a dog's mind during its final moments, leaving many pet owners struggling to hold back tears. For countless dog owners, the thought of saying goodbye to a beloved pet is almost unbearable, but one vet believes there is a compelling reason to remain by their side until the very end.
The Final Search for Comfort
In a heartfelt video, pet care content creator known as @dr.morgan.dog.care shared that while dogs spend their lives turning to their owners for comfort, guidance, and reassurance, that connection does not fade when they are nearing the end of life. She explained, "We know dogs think about us when we're gone, but researchers wanted to know what's the last thing a dog thinks about before they die."
According to Dr Morgan, observations of dogs receiving end-of-life care uncovered a poignant pattern. "They found the dog's eyes were searching not for food, not for comfort, but for their person. This means your dog's final thought isn't, 'I'm scared' or 'I'm in pain.' It's 'Where are you?'"
A Plea to Stay
The vet acknowledged that many owners find it understandably difficult to be present during euthanasia due to the emotional overwhelm. However, she noted that dogs often spend their final moments gazing towards the door, anticipating the person they love most to walk back in. "The dog's eyes go to the door. They're looking for you, waiting for you to come back because you always come back," she said.
Dr Morgan encouraged owners to stay with their pets if they are able. "When that day comes, stay," she urged. "It's the hardest thing you'll ever do, but it's the last gift you can give them. Let the last face they see be yours. Let the last thing they feel be your hand."
Scientific Perspective
While there is no scientific evidence that dogs comprehend death in the same way humans do, experts suggest they are remarkably attuned to changes around them. Pet health specialists note that dogs can pick up on subtle variations in scents, sounds, and behaviour that humans often overlook. Their exceptional sense of smell enables them to detect everything from illnesses and low blood sugar to approaching seizures and infections.
Some specialists believe dogs might even recognize biological changes in animals and people approaching death. Whether dogs grasp these changes within themselves remains unclear, but they can definitely sense when something has altered. As dogs become gravely ill, they frequently experience shifts in routine, comfort, and physical capabilities. They may also respond to the emotions of those surrounding them.
Emotional Response from Pet Owners
The moving clip rapidly resonated with pet owners, with many recounting their own experiences of staying beside their dogs until the final moments. One user commented, "As a vet professional, we have been talking about this for years. Please stay with your pet." Another added, "You always stay. They would stay and protect you." A third user shared, "I've always been there at the end, whispering in their ear how much I love them and telling them what a good dog they've been and that they've been the biggest gift in my life."
