Brits may need four extra documents to enter Spain

Millions of British holidaymakers planning to visit Spain this summer are being reminded of updated entry requirements that could demand up to four additional documents at the border. Since Brexit, UK travellers face stricter rules when entering the Schengen zone, which includes Spain.

Passport validity rules

Your passport must have a date of issue within 10 years of your arrival date. If you renewed your passport before October 1, 2018, it may carry an issue date exceeding 10 years, making it invalid for entry into Spain. Additionally, British passport holders can only stay in the Schengen area for 90 days within any 180-day period.

Entry/Exit System (EES)

Upon arrival, travellers will need to scan their passport, have a photograph taken, and provide four fingerprints under the new EES. Once registered, the digital record remains valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

Additional documents

According to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), border control may request:

  • A return or onward ticket
  • Proof of valid travel insurance
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for your stay
  • Proof of accommodation, such as a hotel reservation, property address, or an invitation letter (carta de invitación) if staying with friends or family

Travellers are advised to carry these documents to avoid any issues at the border.
