Oldham Locals Fear Death On Vulcan Street After Decades

Residents of Vulcan Street in Oldham, Greater Manchester, have expressed fears that it is only a matter of time before a fatal accident occurs on the road, which has seen numerous serious collisions over the past 26 years.

Sharon McLean, whose son was run over on the street more than two decades ago, said: 'It happens all the time. Sometimes it’s bloody murder but what can you do about it?' She added that her son spent 11 weeks in hospital with a broken femur.

Other locals described seeing people thrown '30 feet in the air' and suffering broken bones. Julie Smith, who has campaigned for speed bumps for 25 years, said: 'It shouldn’t take a kid being run over for someone to do something.'

Labour Councillor Josh Charters has called for a meeting with the council’s highways team and Greater Manchester Police, warning: 'Although we are lucky we haven’t had a fatality on this road, it’s only a matter of time.'

An Oldham Council spokesperson said: 'Road safety is a priority for the council... We are working with Greater Manchester Police and local councillors to review the issues raised and consider what measures may be appropriate.'
