US Defence Chief Hegseth Hails 'Historic' Gains in Iran Conflict as Reinforcements Deploy
Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has lauded the "incredible" and "historic" outcomes of the joint United States and Israeli bombing campaign against Iran, now entering its fifth day. In a news conference on Wednesday morning, Hegseth asserted that "America is winning decisively" and declared Iran "toast," highlighting the elimination of a leader implicated in an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump during recent missile strikes.
Submarine Attack Marks First Since World War II
Hegseth confirmed a significant military escalation, revealing that a US submarine successfully sank an Iranian warship in international waters. He described this action as the first such attack on an enemy vessel since the Second World War, underscoring the unprecedented nature of the current conflict. The defence secretary emphasised the operation's precision and strategic impact, framing it as a critical blow to Iranian naval capabilities.
Casualties and Vengeance Pledged
The human cost of the conflict is mounting, with Hegseth vowing to avenge the deaths of six US service members killed in the fighting. Iranian casualties are reported to be at least 1,045 people, a toll that Hegseth attributed to the devastating effectiveness of US military operations. He reiterated that the US is pursuing its objectives "decisively, devastatingly, and without mercy," signalling no immediate respite in the offensive.
Reinforcements En Route to the Region
In a move that signals continued escalation, Hegseth announced the imminent arrival of additional US forces in the Middle East, including jet fighters and bombers. He stressed that the United States "will take all the time we need to ensure success," indicating a prolonged commitment to the campaign. This reinforcement strategy aims to bolster existing operations and maintain pressure on Iranian targets, with Hegseth boldly stating, "We are just getting started," in reference to the broader military effort.
The defence secretary's remarks reflect a confident and aggressive stance, as the US intensifies its involvement in the region. The ongoing conflict, characterised by high-stakes military actions and significant casualties, continues to evolve with these new developments, shaping the geopolitical landscape in the Middle East.
