Joy Ballard's path to educational leadership was unconventional. She left formal education at age sixteen without any qualifications and supported herself through various jobs including work as a kennel assistant and cleaner while raising three children. In a 2015 interview, she revealed that during her childhood in Southampton, she did not see the point in school, growing up in challenging circumstances with parents who struggled with alcohol dependency.
Her educational journey began in adulthood when she responded to a newspaper advertisement for a college course to improve writing skills, eventually earning her English GCSE. This led to employment at an adult education college where she worked with disaffected youth from local schools. After being encouraged to pursue teacher training, she rose through the ranks to become deputy head of Woodlands Community College in Southampton by 2008.
