Iran's national soccer team has officially relocated its base camp for the upcoming World Cup from the United States to Mexico, following approval from FIFA, according to a statement released on Saturday by Mehdi Taj, president of the Iran Football Federation.
Decision Amid Security Concerns
The move comes amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding the war in the Middle East and associated security concerns. The team had originally been scheduled to train in Tucson, Arizona, but officials there declined to comment on the change. FIFA has not yet confirmed the relocation, but Taj stated that the governing body granted permission after requests and meetings in Istanbul and a webinar with FIFA's Secretary General.
New Base in Tijuana
Iran's squad will now be based in Tijuana, Mexico, a city located just across the border from the United States. The team is placed in Group G and is set to face New Zealand in Inglewood, California, for its opening match on June 15.
All World Cup participant base camps must receive FIFA approval, Taj emphasized, expressing gratitude for the swift resolution of the request.
