Belarus's exiled opposition leader, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, made her first visit to Kyiv following Russia's most extensive missile attack on Ukraine this year. The visit comes amid international concerns regarding the Belarusian government's potential support for Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
France Issues Warning to Belarus
French President Emmanuel Macron spoke with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, warning him against allowing Belarus to be drawn further into Russia's “war of aggression.” Macron's call underscores Western fears that Belarus could become more directly involved in the conflict.
Ukraine's Concerns Over a New Front
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has cautioned that Belarus could provide a launchpad for Russia to open a new front in northern Ukraine. The recent missile barrage on Kyiv wounded at least 87 people, including children, and damaged numerous buildings.
Tsikhanouskaya's visit to Kyiv is seen as a show of solidarity with Ukraine and a reminder that many Belarusians oppose their government's alignment with Russia. The exiled leader continues to advocate for democratic change in Belarus, while the Lukashenko regime remains a key ally of Moscow.
