Duffy first shocked fans in February 2020 when she opened up about the terrifying experience in an open letter titled The 5th House, Duffy, posted on her Instagram page. In the letter, she detailed being drugged at a restaurant while celebrating her birthday, abducted abroad, raped, and then held captive in her own home after being flown back.

Sean Doyle, Vice President of Unscripted at Disney+, commented on the project, stating, "Fifteen years ago, Duffy was one of the most famous singers in the world. This film will give her the chance to tell her story in her own words." He praised Duffy's courage and honesty in sharing her experience.

Career and Disappearance

Duffy, born Aimée Anne Duffy in Bangor, Wales, shot to fame in the early 2000s with hits like "Mercy" and "Warwick Avenue" from her multi-platinum album Rockferry. She won three BRIT Awards and a Grammy, but vanished from the music scene for ten years after the ordeal.

In her 2020 letter, she described the aftermath, including high suicide risk, isolation, and struggles with recovery. She wrote, "Rape is like living murder, you are alive, but dead." Duffy also revealed she had told two female police officers about the incidents over the years.

Return to the Spotlight

After retreating from the limelight, Duffy was seen in a TikTok clip in March 2025 and reportedly began working on a third album in June 2025. A source told The Sun On Sunday, "The time is right for her to make a comeback, she has done enough healing and is ready to make music."

Director Gill Callan added, "Duffy’s life has been shaped by success and fame, but equally by pain, defiance, and an irrepressible sense of self." The documentary aims to highlight her resilience and the tension between vulnerability and confidence in her story.

Impact and Healing

Duffy's decision to speak out has resonated with many, as she shared messages from other survivors of sexual abuse. In her letter, she expressed hope that her story would bring comfort, stating, "I believe that if you speak from the heart within you, the heart within others will answer."

The documentary, part of a collaboration with Northern Ireland Screen, is set to premiere on Disney+, offering a poignant look at one of music's most enigmatic figures and her path to reclaiming her voice.
