EastEnders Star Natalie Cassidy Shares Heartbreaking Family Loss
EastEnders legend Natalie Cassidy has opened up about a devastating family tragedy that shaped her life from a young age. The actress, best known for her long-running role as Sonia Fowler on the BBC soap opera, revealed the profound impact of losing her mother when she was just a teenager.
A Mother's Battle with Cancer
Natalie Cassidy's mother, Evelyn, passed away in 2002 following a difficult battle with bowel cancer. At the time, Natalie was only 19 years old, and her mother was just 63. During a recent appearance on Love Your Weekend with Alana Titchmarsh, Natalie reflected on this painful chapter of her life.
"I lost my mum at 19. She was 63, she was young," Natalie shared with the host. She explained that her parents were older when she was born, with her mother being 44 and her father 46 at the time of her birth. This age gap meant her two brothers were significantly older - 15 and 18 when Natalie arrived.
Carrying Guilt and Finding Forgiveness
For years, Natalie carried substantial guilt about her mother's passing. On her Life with Nat podcast last year, she confessed: "When you're a late teenager you're not really thinking about your mum unfortunately. I lost her quite suddenly and I've carried a lot of guilt really about the fact that I wasn't there. I wasn't there for her and didn't spend the time I should have with her."
However, Natalie has gradually found peace through family support and perspective. "But my brothers always say they were the same at that age and they got to come back because they were older," she explained. "So I've kind of forgiven myself if you like. But the days for me don't get any easier – you just learn to live with it."
Finding Silver Linings in Family
Despite the tragedy, Natalie found comfort in her expanding family. "I suppose I did lose mum, but what I gained was sisters-in-law and nieces which are like my sisters because I was an aunty at 3, so it all worked out in the end," she reflected during her television appearance.
Further Loss and Healing Through Writing
Tragedy struck again in May 2021 when Natalie's father passed away at age 84. Speaking on Sunday Brunch in 2025, she revealed how writing her autobiography Happy Days became a crucial therapeutic process for dealing with both losses.
"I lost my mum at 19 and I didn't really deal with that grief and then I lost my beautiful dad four years ago but he lived with me and I cared for him and I took him out in the world," Natalie shared. "And it was an amazing privilege but writing it all down, I was like 'oh my goodness', I didn't deal with my mum at all until that happened and it pieced it all together for me."
A Career of Resilience
Natalie Cassidy first joined EastEnders as Sonia Fowler in 1993, becoming one of the soap's most recognizable faces. Last year, she made the difficult decision to leave the show after decades, explaining she "felt the time was right to do so." Her openness about personal tragedy demonstrates the resilience that has characterized both her personal life and professional career.
Love Your Weekend with Alana Titchmarsh continues to air on Sunday mornings at 9:30am on ITV1, featuring candid conversations with celebrities about their personal journeys and challenges.
