A NATO military jet intercepted and shot down a drone of apparent Ukrainian origin over Estonia on Tuesday, according to Estonian Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur. Pevkur stated that the drone was likely a stray and not directed at Estonia, with authorities currently searching for its wreckage to ensure it poses no threat.
Recent Incidents in the Baltic Region
This incident is the most recent in a series of Ukrainian drone airspace violations in the Baltic states—Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia—which share borders with Russia and Belarus. Ukraine attributes these stray drones to Russian interference, claiming they are intended for military targets within Russia.
Previous occurrences include a drone causing a fire at a Latvian oil storage facility, an event that led to the collapse of the Latvian government. In response, Estonia has urged Ukraine to exercise greater control over its drone operations.
The downing of the drone underscores ongoing tensions in the region, with NATO forces maintaining a vigilant presence to protect allied airspace.
