Exclusive: Magician James Phelan Honors Uncle Paul Daniels on BGT Stage
In a poignant and mesmerizing moment on Britain's Got Talent, magician James Phelan, the nephew of legendary TV magician Paul Daniels, delivered a stunning audition that left judges Simon Cowell and Amanda Holden spellbound. The performance, airing tonight on ITV, serves as a heartfelt tribute to his late uncle, who passed away from a brain tumour ten years ago.
A Legacy of Magic and Mentorship
James Phelan, 33, from Cobham, Surrey, learned the art of magic not through direct instruction but by studying old VHS tapes of The Paul Daniels Magic Show. His uncle, while supportive, encouraged him to forge his own path, teaching him only a simple card trick and advising, "don't be me, be you, because you're the best one of you there is." This philosophy has shaped James's career, as he quit a successful marketing job to pursue magic full-time, now touring nationally with shows like The Man Who Was Magic.
Emotional Audition in Blackpool's Winter Gardens
Performing at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, a venue where Paul Daniels often performed, James felt the weight of his uncle's legacy. "As I stood on stage, his pictures were on the walls as I walked to the stage. I could feel the weight of the room," he recalled. The audition, described as a whirlwind, helped him feel close to Paul again, with judges praising his skill. Simon Cowell, a known magic enthusiast, and Amanda Holden were particularly impressed, making it a standout moment in BGT history.
Overcoming Past Setbacks and Personal Connections
This marks James's second attempt on BGT; his first audition a decade ago was never aired due to Paul Daniels's death shortly after filming. Reflecting on this, James shared, "It's been 10 years now, almost to the day, and it feels like now's the time to do it." He remains close to his aunt, Debbie McGee, Paul's widow, who supports his career and recently launched her own stage show. Debbie expressed pride, stating that Paul would be amazed by James's achievements.
Magic as a Universal Escape and Confidence Builder
James believes magic offers pure escapism for all ages, from children to adults. He credits it with boosting his confidence, especially during school years when he felt invisible. "Magic helped me to find my place," he said, noting he always carries a pack of cards. He even humorously mentioned wanting to teach King Charles III, a Magic Circle member, a trick, highlighting magic's enduring appeal.
Aiming for the BGT Crown and Continuing a Family Tradition
With last year's winner being illusionist Harry Moulding, James hopes to win the BGT crown, arguing that "there's always room for more magic" in the world. His performance tonight not only honors his uncle but also showcases his unique talent, blending family tradition with personal innovation. As Debbie McGee noted, James is full of charisma and love for the audience, truly following in Paul's footsteps.
