Peter Andre Expresses Empathy for Gemma Collins' I'm A Celebrity Distress
Peter Andre has publicly sympathised with Gemma Collins following her emotional breakdown during the filming of I'm A Celebrity...South Africa. The pop star, aged 53, who famously met his now ex-wife Katie Price while competing on the reality survival series in 2004, has been closely following the drama unfolding in the South African jungle as the all-stars edition continues to captivate audiences.
The Reality of Jungle Life: More Mentally Taxing Than It Appears
In his exclusive column for new! magazine, Peter Andre offered a candid perspective on Gemma Collins' televised tears. He emphasised that the experience is significantly "mentally harder" than viewers might anticipate, particularly when the harsh realities of camp life set in. Gemma, who rose to fame on The Only Way Is Essex in 2011 and previously appeared on the regular I'm A Celebrity series in 2014 but left after just a few days, has returned to the jungle for another attempt, though the lack of basic amenities proved overwhelming earlier this week.
Peter wrote: "Gemma Collins really is TV gold. She was recently seen breaking down in tears as she adjusted to life without home comforts in the I’m A Celeb jungle. Some people might think she’s just acting out, but she may just be genuine in the way that she's feeling. It is quite amazing when you’re actually in that situation, as to how you react to things."
Food Deprivation and Psychological Strain in the Camp
The singer, who finished third on the 2004 series behind Jennie Bond and winner Kerry Katona, also addressed the controversy surrounding food theft among campmates. He explained that the starvation process is a central challenge that affects everyone profoundly, leading to heightened tensions and revealing true personalities after several days.
Peter added: "There’s also been accusations of campmates stealing food because everyone is so hungry and, speaking from my experience, it is harder mentally than you can imagine. The starvation process is the thing that got to all of us. After three or four days, that’s when personalities start to come out. Most people on that show have never, ever known what it’s like to not have food at their disposal. It teaches you to appreciate the basic things in life."
Gemma Collins' Emotional Outburst and Support from Campmates
Earlier this week, Gemma Collins, star of Diva Forever, was reduced to tears as she grappled with missing her home comforts. She expressed her frustration openly, stating: "can’t wash properly. I can’t have anything nice. Ive got to wash up every f**king five minutes. I am not used to this. It’s not f**king me!"
Fortunately, former Emmerdale actor Adam Thomas was on hand to provide comfort during her moment of distress. On social media platform X, formerly Twitter, fans praised Adam's supportive nature, with one user commenting: "Adam looking after Gemma. He's an absolute gentleman. And Gemma girllllll you are doing so welllll, so well." Another added: "And this is why Gemma didn’t cope in the jungle the first time.. at least she’s having a sense of humour in her sadness. Adam is a gem."
Peter Andre's Reflections on Returning to the Jungle
Peter Andre, who made a brief return to the jungle in 2011, previously noted in his column that he had high hopes for Gemma when her comeback was announced. However, he expressed uncertainty about whether he would ever participate in the South Africa edition himself.
He said: "It’s great to see the I’m A Celebrity South Africa line-up. They’ve got some great characters in there. I know quite a few of them. Harry Redknapp is wonderful – he’ll go really far. Gemma Collins will be a good laugh. It’ll be great. I’ve never really thought about doing it because I’ve done it twice now. I’d rather embrace new challenges – but never say never!"
I'm A Celebrity...South Africa continues to air weekdays at 9pm on ITV and ITVX, offering viewers an inside look at the psychological and physical challenges faced by celebrities in the demanding jungle environment.
