Pro-Kremlin Loyalist Ilya Remeslo Launches Unprecedented Attack on Putin
In a stunning reversal, Ilya Remeslo, a long-time pro-Kremlin operator, has openly challenged Russian President Vladimir Putin, demanding his resignation and trial for war crimes. The 42-year-old lawyer, known for targeting critics of the regime, posted a manifesto titled "Five reasons why I stopped supporting Vladimir Putin" to his 90,000 Telegram followers, sending shockwaves through Russia's online community.
Remeslo's Scathing Critique of Putin's Leadership
Remeslo accused Putin of waging a "failing war" in Ukraine that has caused millions of casualties and devastated the economy. He argued that Putin's over two decades in power demonstrate how "absolute power corrupts", calling for him to step aside. In an interview, Remeslo stated, "Vladimir Putin should resign and be put on trial as a war criminal. His personalised, corrupt system is doomed to collapse." He criticised the military stalemate in Ukraine, economic decline, and recent internet shutdowns, claiming, "This man has destroyed everything he could lay his hands on. The country is literally falling apart."
Unprecedented Breach of Taboos in Pro-War Circles
While some pro-war bloggers have criticised military tactics, very few have directly challenged Putin or the invasion's rationale. Ivan Philippov, a researcher, noted this marks a rare breach of longstanding taboos, calling it "unprecedented". Remeslo, a former member of the Kremlin-controlled Public Chamber, has previously targeted figures like Alexei Navalny, making his turn even more surprising.
Speculation and Denials Over Motives
The outburst sparked immediate speculation, with theories ranging from a hacked account to a staged Kremlin provocation. Remeslo denied these claims, asserting, "None of this is staged. I am just speaking the truth." He reported receiving frantic calls from security services urging him to retract the posts, suggesting systemic panic. Opposition figures, including Leonid Volkov, initially suspected staging but later acknowledged the remarks crossed dangerous red lines, noting, "People are jailed for far less."
Political Context and Potential Consequences
This comes amid growing war fatigue and economic pressures in Russia, with polls showing increased desire for an end to the conflict. Despite this, experts believe Putin's power structure remains resilient. Remeslo acknowledged risks, citing cases like Igor Girkin's imprisonment and Yevgeny Prigozhin's death, but stated, "I am ready for any trial against me. The time has come to somehow break this vicious cycle." He emphasised his responsibility as a former regime supporter, highlighting a potential shift in loyalist sentiment.
