Rai Sport Director Steps Down Following Olympics Commentary Fiasco
The director of Rai Sport, Paolo Petrecca, has resigned after his error-filled commentary during the Winter Olympics opening ceremony led to widespread criticism and internal protests at the Italian public broadcaster. Petrecca, who was appointed to lead Rai Sport last year, submitted his resignation on Thursday following a board meeting, as confirmed by a source within Rai.
Gaffes That Sparked Outrage
During the live broadcast, Petrecca made a series of notable mistakes that left viewers and colleagues stunned. He incorrectly welcomed audiences to Rome's Stadio Olimpico instead of Milan's San Siro, the actual venue for the event. Further blunders included mistaking Italian actor Matilda De Angelis for singer Mariah Carey and confusing Kirsty Coventry, president of the International Olympic Committee, with Laura Mattarella, the daughter of Italy's president.
Petrecca also failed to recognise two prominent members of the Italian women's volleyball team during the torch relay and made inappropriate comments about Spanish athletes being "always very hot" and Chinese participants "naturally ... having phones in their hands." These remarks compounded the embarrassment, leading to his removal from presenting coverage of the closing ceremony.
Internal Protests and Political Fallout
The gaffes prompted immediate backlash from Rai Sport journalists, who withheld bylines from their Olympics coverage and planned a three-day strike after the Games concluded. In a show of solidarity, journalists across Rai's news networks also withdrew their bylines last Friday. The internal union, CDR, stated that its members were "embarrassed" by Petrecca's performance.
Political opponents seized on the controversy, criticising Petrecca's appointment as an example of prioritising political loyalty over merit. Stefano Graziano, a politician with the centre-left Democratic Party and member of Rai's parliamentary oversight committee, labelled Petrecca an "emblem" of what he termed "TeleMeloni," accusing the broadcaster of rightwing bias under Giorgia Meloni's government. Graziano argued that this approach has weakened the authority of the news industry and the broader Rai system, calling for a significant change.
Broader Implications for Rai
In an unprecedented move in 2024, news anchors on Rai's three main TV channels read a statement from Usigrai condemning Meloni's administration for allegedly transforming Rai into a "government megaphone." This reflects ongoing tensions, as Meloni had previously accused Rai of leftwing bias before coming to power in October 2022.
According to reports from Corriere della Sera, Petrecca will be replaced by Marco Lollobrigida, an established sport presenter at Rai, after the Milan Cortina Olympics conclude in Verona on Sunday. The resignation highlights deeper issues within Italy's public broadcasting sector, raising questions about editorial independence and political influence.
