Russian Drone Assaults Claim Lives in Ukraine as Kyiv Retaliates with Factory Strike
Russian strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals in Ukraine, according to official reports on Sunday, as the conflict intensifies with Ukraine launching a counterattack on a drone manufacturing facility in southwestern Russia. The overnight violence underscores the escalating nature of the war, with both sides exchanging heavy fire and suffering casualties.
Deadly Attacks in Chernihiv and Kherson
In northern Ukraine, a massive nighttime drone strike targeted the city of Chernihiv, leading to tragic outcomes. Dmytro Bryzhynskyi, the head of the city's military administration, confirmed via Telegram that a 16-year-old boy lost his life when rescuers discovered his body amidst the rubble. Additionally, four other civilians sustained injuries, including three women and one man, with several houses set ablaze during the assault.
Further south, in Kherson, local officials reported another drone attack that proved fatal. Oleksandr Prokudin, the regional administration head, stated that a man died from wounds after a drone struck a van in the city centre. A second man was hospitalized with blast injuries, highlighting the widespread impact of these aerial assaults on civilian areas.
Ukraine's Air Defense and Retaliatory Strike
Ukraine's air force revealed that Russia launched 236 drones into Ukrainian territory overnight, with 203 successfully intercepted and shot down. However, 32 drones managed to hit targets across 18 separate locations, causing significant damage and loss of life. In response, Ukraine executed a strategic strike on a key Russian facility.
The General Staff of Ukraine reported that Ukrainian drones targeted the Atlant Aero factory in Taganrog, a city located approximately 55 kilometers east of Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine. This factory is instrumental in designing and producing strike and reconnaissance drones, as well as components for more powerful unmanned aerial vehicles capable of carrying guided bombs weighing up to 250 kilograms. The attack sparked a fire at the site, disrupting production capabilities.
Impact on Taganrog and Russian Claims
According to Yuri Slyusar, the Russian regional governor, three people were injured in the nighttime air attack on commercial infrastructure in Taganrog. While he did not specify the exact facility hit, he noted that warehouses were set on fire following the strike. Taganrog Mayor Svetlana Kambulova added that the assault damaged commercial enterprises, a vocational school, and multiple cars, indicating broader collateral damage.
In a separate statement, Russia's Defense Ministry claimed that its forces shot down 274 Ukrainian drones during the night, along with guided aerial bombs and a Ukrainian-made Neptune missile. However, the ministry did not disclose how many of these projectiles struck their intended targets, leaving the full extent of the damage unclear.
