Rylan Clark has emerged as the BBC's favourite to become the new host of Strictly Come Dancing, according to sources. The 37-year-old presenter, known for his work on spin-off It Takes Two, is among contenders to replace Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman, who announced their departure last October.
BBC insiders confirm that Clark has been invited to an audition where he will be paired with other potential hosts, including Irish broadcaster and former Strictly contestant Angela Scanlon, 42. Screen tests are scheduled in a fortnight to assess chemistry between candidates.
Strictly sources say bosses want a fresh line-up with strong connections to the show. One source told the Daily Mail: 'Rylan has a long-standing association with the show, and Angela has been a contestant. But the main thing is they'd be a totally new pairing – no baggage, no former shows, uniquely Strictly.'
Producers are keen to ensure that the new presenting duo does not revert to a traditional male-female dynamic where the man dominates. 'Rylan isn't like that at all. Plus, he absolutely loves the show and the viewers already love him,' the source added.
Other names in the frame include One Show host Alex Jones, Zoe Ball, and Bradley Walsh, presenter of The Chase. Clark, who found fame on The X Factor in 2012, is described as 'very keen' to be paired with Scanlon, and bosses believe they 'tick every box'.
Insiders suggest Clark would 'bite the BBC's hand off' for the role, calling it his dream job. 'He has so many loyal fans. If he gets the job they will most certainly tune in to Strictly. He will be a ratings winner and the BBC know it,' one source said.
