US Embassy Issues Stark Safety Warning for Americans in Israel
The US Embassy in Jerusalem has delivered a sobering message to American citizens currently in Israel, stating explicitly that it cannot guarantee their safety if they opt to depart the country using shuttle or taxi services. This advisory comes as Israel enters a fourth consecutive day of intense warfare with Iran, with commercial flights across the region largely suspended.
Government Advice: Shelter in Place Amid Flights Cancellation
Current official guidance from the US government strongly recommends that American nationals shelter in place and make independent security arrangements. The embassy clarified that while the Israeli Ministry of Tourism has initiated shuttle operations to the Taba Border Crossing with Egypt, beginning Monday, it cannot endorse or recommend this evacuation method.
The embassy's formal statement, published on its website and shared via social media platform X, reads: "The U.S. Embassy cannot make any recommendation for or against the Ministry of Tourism's shuttle. If you choose to avail yourself of this option to depart, the U.S. government cannot guarantee your safety."
State Department's Urgent Regional Travel Advisory
This warning follows a broader travel alert issued by the US State Department, which categorically instructed Americans to "DEPART NOW" from Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza due to "serious safety risks." The advisory, posted by Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Mora Namdar, also encompassed numerous neighboring countries including Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, and Iran itself.
The embassy has emphasized that it is "not in a position at this time to evacuate or directly assist Americans in departing Israel," and is merely providing shuttle information as a courtesy service. All US government employees and their families have been ordered to continue sheltering in place near their residences until further notice.
Escalating Conflict and Casualty Reports
The security situation has deteriorated rapidly, with Iranian forces launching a significant barrage of retaliatory missiles into Israel. Official reports confirm twelve fatalities and hundreds of injuries, including nine individuals who perished when a bomb shelter collapsed in Beit Shemesh. Tragically, three of the victims were teenage siblings: Yaakov Bitton, aged 16, Avigail Bitton, 15, and Sarah Bitton, 13.
Adding to the tension, early morning sirens in Jerusalem warning of a suspected hostile aircraft infiltration were later determined to be a false alarm, now under investigation by Israeli military authorities. Meanwhile, the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group has initiated attacks from Lebanon, framing them as vengeance for the killing of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Evacuation Routes and Operational Border Crossings
For those American citizens who decide to attempt departure, the Taba Border Crossing with Egypt is currently operational and scheduled to remain open 24 hours daily. Passengers aiming to reach Jordan can utilize the shuttle to Eilat and then proceed independently by taxi to the Yitzhak Rabin Border Crossing.
Limited flight options are available from Egypt's Taba and Sharm al-Sheikh airports, as well as Jordan's Queen Alia International Airport, for individuals seeking to exit the Middle East entirely.
Critical Safety Instructions for Remaining Citizens
The US Embassy has issued stringent safety protocols for Americans who choose to stay in Israel:
- Exercise extreme caution and maintain heightened personal security awareness at all times.
- Identify and know the precise location of the nearest shelter in case of a red alert siren.
- Avoid all demonstrations, large public gatherings, and areas with significant police presence.
- Continuously monitor local media outlets for real-time updates.
- Regularly consult the US State Department's official website for the latest travel advisories and instructions.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to assert that the military campaign is essential to dismantle Iran's Islamic leadership, as the conflict shows no immediate signs of de-escalation, leaving thousands of foreign nationals, including Americans, stranded and facing profound uncertainty.
