The row erupted after green energy tycoon Dale Vince, who has donated millions to Sir Keir and the Labour Party, took to social media in the wake of the atrocity on Bondi Beach. The attack left 15 people dead, including rabbis and a young girl, and has been widely condemned as an act of anti-Semitic terrorism.
Mr Vince's comments targeted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Mr Netanyahu had rebuked his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, over Australia's support for a Palestinian state, stating that anti-Semitism was "a cancer that spreads when leaders remain silent".
In response, the Labour donor wrote: 'Nothing to do with Israel committing genocide in Palestine then?' He added, 'Netanyahu wants anti-Semitism to be a thing, it validates him - he acts to make it so.'
Political Pressure Mounts on Labour Leader
Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch led the condemnation, swiftly seizing on Mr Vince's remarks. She described them as "a morally repugnant statement" and directly challenged Sir Keir Starmer.
"Will Keir Starmer condemn his big financial backer?" Ms Badenoch demanded. "Staying silent implies he sees nothing wrong." Other politicians on the right also joined the calls for the Labour leader to take action.
Starmer's Response to the Atrocity
Sir Keir Starmer has addressed the horrific attack itself, separately from the donor controversy. He stated that the Bondi Beach assault was "an appalling terror attack" that had left Jewish communities globally feeling "even more insecure today than they did before".
The Labour leader has not, at the time of writing, issued a specific public condemnation of Mr Vince's social media posts. This silence is now the focal point of significant political scrutiny, placing him in a difficult position regarding a major source of party funding.
