Joe Gomez has admitted he is unsure if he will be at Liverpool again next season, stating that "anything can happen" during the summer transfer window. The defender, who is Liverpool's longest-serving current player, will enter the final year of his contract while the club has already secured two young defenders who could eventually succeed him.
Contract uncertainty and competition
Gomez, who joined Liverpool from Charlton for £3.5 million in 2015, has made 272 appearances for the club without scoring a goal. However, after a career-best 51 games in the 2023-24 season under Jurgen Klopp, he has started only six Premier League matches in each of Arne Slot's two seasons in charge. With Ibrahima Konate reportedly close to signing a new deal and captain Virgil van Dijk having another year on his contract, Liverpool is set to have four other centre-backs on their books next season.
New arrivals and versatility
Giovanni Leoni arrived at Anfield last summer, though he suffered a cruciate ligament injury in September. In January, Liverpool arranged a deal for Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes, who will join the squad next season. Gomez, who has attracted interest from Aston Villa and Newcastle in the past, has also played at left-back and right-back during his time at Liverpool, showcasing his versatility.
Speaking about his future, Gomez said: "I think anything can happen. I don't know is the honest answer. I've only got a year left so I don't know but whatever is meant to be will be, I guess. But I'm so grateful to have had this time here at this club. I'll always be grateful to have had 11 years at a place like this. All I can do is be thankful and we'll see."
