Hull City have clinched promotion to the Premier League in the most dramatic fashion, defeating Middlesbrough 1-0 in the Championship playoff final at Wembley. Oli McBurnie scored the only goal of the game in stoppage time, securing the Tigers' return to the top flight after a tense and controversial fortnight.
Dramatic Finish Under the Wembley Arch
In searing heat at Wembley, the match was a drab affair with only two shots on target. The decisive moment came in stoppage time when Yu Hirakawa crossed from the left flank. Middlesbrough goalkeeper Sol Brynn could only parry the ball into the path of McBurnie, who tapped in from close range, sending the Hull City fans into raptures.
The Spygate Scandal
The victory caps a tumultuous period following the Spygate scandal that saw Southampton expelled from the playoffs. Middlesbrough only learned they would be playing in the final on Tuesday after Southampton were sensationally kicked out by the English Football League (EFL). Southampton's appeal was dismissed on Wednesday evening, leaving Boro with just two days to prepare for the final.
The controversy began when a Southampton intern was caught filming a Middlesbrough training session from behind a tree before the first leg of their semi-final at the Riverside Stadium. That game ended goalless, but Southampton won the second leg to book their Wembley place before the EFL intervened. Southampton also admitted to spying on Oxford United and Ipswich Town during the regular season.
Hull City's promotion is estimated to be worth around £200 million, securing their place among England's elite for the upcoming Premier League season.
