Donald Trump has described his vice president, JD Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as a potential White House "dream team," but he stopped short of endorsing either for the presidency.
Trump's Remarks at White House Dinner
During a dinner in the White House Rose Garden on Monday, Trump invited guests to clap for Vance or Rubio in an informal popularity contest. Despite the enthusiastic response, Trump clarified, "That does not mean you have my endorsement under any circumstance."
Decrying potential Democratic opponents, including former Vice President Kamala Harris and outgoing California Governor Gavin Newsom, Trump said, "There are a lot of beauties out there, JD." He added, "I envy you and other people, I don't know. Who is it going to be? Is it going to be JD? Is it going to be somebody else?"
When the audience reacted favorably to both men, Trump remarked, "All right, sounds like a good ticket. That was a perfect ticket. By the way, I do believe that's a dream team, but these are minor details." He then suggested, "I think it sounds like presidential candidate and vice-presidential candidate."
Constitutional Constraints and Speculation
Under the U.S. Constitution, Trump cannot run for a third term, but he has repeatedly hinted at the possibility, often to provoke criticism. He has previously praised both Vance and Rubio.
Meanwhile, Kamala Harris stated last month that she is actively considering another presidential bid in 2028. Harris replaced Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee in 2024 after he withdrew from the race, ultimately losing to Trump.
Several potential candidates are vying for the 2028 nomination, with no clear front-runner emerging.
