A nine-month-old baby girl in Ukraine is fighting for her life after her leg was blown off in a brutal Russian drone strike on the city of Kryvyi Rih. The attack, which also killed a 65-year-old woman and a man, has been condemned as 'cynical' by Ukrainian officials.
Details of the Attack
The strike occurred in the Dnipropetrovsk region, where a total of eight civilians were killed and 11 wounded across the area. The attacks resumed after Russian President Vladimir Putin ended a three-day partial ceasefire. Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the Kryvyi Rih Military Administration, confirmed the horrific injury to the infant, stating: 'A small child, a nine-month-old baby girl, had her leg torn off.'
Zelensky's Response
President Volodymyr Zelensky slammed the 'cynical and utterly senseless Russian drone strike on a regular residential building in Kryvyi Rih.' He reported that two elderly people died and their nine-month-old granddaughter is in hospital with serious injuries. 'Our doctors are doing everything possible to save her life,' he said. Zelensky called for unwavering support in confronting Russia: 'After the end of a partial three-day ceasefire, Russia continues to kill and maim Ukrainians. Pressure on it should not be weakened in any way.'
War Momentum
Despite the attack, Zelensky claimed Ukraine has the strongest positions in years, both on the frontline and through long-range sanctions and partnership results. However, he warned of potential waves of Russian drone attacks throughout Wednesday, noting that over a hundred drones were in Ukrainian airspace. Russia has shifted tactics to strike during daylight hours, disrupting civilian life more severely. Since the war began over four years ago, Russia has mainly conducted major strikes at night, but recently has sent hundreds of drones and missiles during the day, setting a record on March 24.
Air Defense and Denials
Ukraine's air force reported that Russia attacked with 139 drones from Tuesday evening, of which 111 were downed or neutralised. Moscow denies intentionally targeting civilians but has killed thousands during the war, claiming strikes on civil infrastructure are legitimate if they degrade Ukraine's warfighting capabilities. Kyiv has intensified long-range attacks on Russia's energy industry, though on a smaller scale.
