A British crew member and a Dutch colleague are set to be medically evacuated from the MV Hondius cruise ship following acute respiratory symptoms linked to a suspected hantavirus outbreak. Global health authorities are investigating potential person-to-person transmission of the virus on board, though the overall risk to global health is currently assessed as low.
Outbreak Details
The MV Hondius embarked on its voyage from Argentina to Cape Verde on 1 April. Since then, at least three individuals have died, and seven hantavirus cases have been identified on the ship, including two confirmed infections. A British passenger is receiving medical care in South Africa, while a Dutch woman passed away after disembarking.
The UK government is coordinating plans for the onward travel of British citizens still aboard the cruise ship. The situation remains under close monitoring by international health agencies.
