Indianapolis Councilman's Home Targeted in Shooting Over Data Centre Dispute
Indianapolis councilman Ron Gibson was awoken early Monday morning when his home was fired upon thirteen times, with a note reading "No Data Centers" discovered on his front porch. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department confirmed the incident occurred around 12:45 a.m. on East 41st Street, with officers finding evidence of gunshots but no injuries reported.
A Terrifying Reality for a Father and Son
Councilman Gibson and his eight-year-old son were unharmed, but the bullets struck perilously close to their dining room table. Gibson revealed his son had been playing with Legos at that very spot just the day before the attack. "That reality is deeply unsettling," Gibson stated. "This was not just an attack on my home, but endangered my child and disrupted the safety of our entire neighbourhood."

Authorities have characterised the shooting as an isolated, targeted event. The FBI is assisting the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department with the ongoing investigation. In an official statement, police emphasised that while public service often involves strong disagreements, violence is never an acceptable response.
"I understand that public service can bring strong opinions and disagreement, but violence is never the answer, especially when it puts families at risk," Gibson affirmed on Monday. "This will not deter me. I will continue to serve the residents of this district with integrity and respect for all voices."

The attack follows recent controversy over a proposed data centre development in Gibson's district. Last week, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Development Commission approved a rezoning petition for Metrobloks, a data centre developer. The project has faced opposition from some area residents and leaders, who voiced concerns about its community impact during a public hearing.
Gibson publicly supported the commission's decision, stating in a release: "The site has remained underutilised for years, and today's action is an important step toward bringing it back into productive use in a way that benefits both the surrounding neighbourhood and our city." He further indicated he would not challenge the petition when it comes before the full Council.
