Tragic Death of Devoted Father in Cornwall Playground
An inquest has heard the heartbreaking details surrounding the death of Terry Howe, a 47-year-old father described by his family as an amazing man who dedicated his life to his loved ones. The forklift driver was found unresponsive in the children's play area of Boscawen Park in Truro, Cornwall, in the early hours of August 8, 2025.
Family's Tribute to a Kind and Caring Soul
During the emotional proceedings at Pydar House in Truro, Terry's wife Danielle Howe and other family members painted a picture of a man who would do anything to help anyone. A statement from his mother and sister read aloud described him as a kind, caring, gentle soul and a fantastic husband who dedicated most of his time to his loving family.
"We will always remember Terry's beautiful smile, his kindness and pure joy he always brought into our lives," they said. Danielle Howe added that her husband was always helping neighbours and family, never taking a sick day from work, and was in a really good place in their marriage before his death.
Mental Health Struggles and Recent Events
The inquest heard that Terry had been suffering with low mood in the weeks leading up to his death. His mental health had declined significantly after he reported being sexually assaulted by a surgeon while a patient at Royal Cornwall Hospital. Although the case was eventually dropped, his wife explained he had not been the same since that traumatic experience.
Additionally, Terry had become increasingly paranoid after taking recreational drugs on a night out the previous weekend. Despite these struggles, he had appeared to enjoy a pleasant evening with family on August 7, just hours before his death.
Final Hours and Coroner's Findings
In the early hours of August 8, Terry got up around 1am to smoke a cigarette and made his son a pot noodle before announcing he was going for a walk. He never returned home. Family members later found him unresponsive in the Boscawen Park play area, with police and ambulance crews attending shortly after to perform CPR.
Senior coroner for Cornwall and Isle of Scilly, Andrew Cox, recorded a conclusion of suicide, stating he could find no other explanation than that Terry had intended to take his own life. Mr Cox noted there was no evidence of third party involvement or suspicious circumstances.
"He had been low in mood in the time prior to his death and there is also evidence that I accept of recent recreational or illicit drug use which appears to have worsened his mood and made him paranoid," the coroner said in his findings.
