Eight Men Sentenced for Horrific Gang Rape of British Teenager in Magaluf
Eight men have been handed prison sentences totalling just over 73 years after pleading guilty to the gang rape of an unconscious 18-year-old British woman in a Magaluf hotel. The harrowing assault, which lasted approximately 30 minutes, occurred in August 2023 at the BH Mallorca Resort and involved degrading acts that were filmed by the perpetrators.
Details of the Attack and Legal Proceedings
According to court documents, the victim was stripped naked and repeatedly sexually assaulted while in a semi-conscious or unconscious state. The indictment revealed that the men, aware of her condition, carried out various sexual acts without her consent. Shockingly, one of the assailants reportedly went into the hotel corridor after the attack and offered "free sex" with the victim to strangers passing by.
Spanish public prosecutors initially sought individual jail terms of 18 to 20 years for each defendant, amounting to a total of 151 years. However, as the trial was set to begin, the eight men—seven French nationals and one Swiss national—entered last-minute guilty pleas in exchange for reduced sentences. The plea bargain resulted in prison terms ranging from four to 15 years for the primary offenders.
Filming and Sharing of the Assault
The court papers detailed that the attack was filmed on mobile phones, with some of the videos being shared on Snapchat as the victim remained unconscious. One suspect was accused of recording 14 videos lasting 170 seconds, while another filmed five videos totalling 142 seconds. These actions led to additional charges related to privacy violations and the publication of the footage.
Five of the men received sentences of nine or 11 years for sexual assault, with three facing higher terms due to repeated offences. They were also given an extra two years and three months for filming the attacks. Three other defendants, who only filmed the assaults, were sentenced to two years and three months in prison, with one receiving an additional four-year term for non-penetrative sexual assault.
Investigation and Arrests
The investigation, led by the Civil Guard in Majorca, was complex as the attackers did not all know each other but joined the assault sporadically. Six suspects were detained in Majorca shortly after the incident, while two others were arrested abroad using European Arrest Warrants. One was apprehended in Scherwiller, France, and another at Basilea Mulhouse Freiburg Airport in France as he attempted to flee to Turkey.
Authorities noted that the first arrest was made after police used the victim's "stolen" mobile phone to locate a suspect. The victim, who was 18 at the time, provided descriptions that helped identify the remaining attackers.
Hotel Response and Aftermath
The BH Mallorca Resort issued a statement expressing deep regret and solidarity with the victim, emphasising full cooperation with the investigation. The hotel condemned the attack and reiterated its commitment to opposing any behaviour that undermines human dignity and physical integrity.
The convicted men are expected to be deported to their home countries after serving part of their sentences, possibly in six or seven years, though prosecutors may argue for them to complete their full terms. A final decision on their prison stay is anticipated next month.
