Ex-Partner's Vicious Lies Drive Man to Suicidal Thoughts in 16-Month Harassment Ordeal
A man was driven to contemplate suicide after his former partner embarked on a horrifying 16-month campaign of psychological abuse against him and his new girlfriend, fabricating malicious lies that resulted in multiple police arrests.
Systematic Fabrication of False Allegations
Joanne Nicholson, 40, from South Shields, South Tyneside, began her campaign of terror in February 2023 after her ex-boyfriend started a new relationship following their separation earlier that year. What began as an amicable split turned vicious when Nicholson systematically spread false claims labeling her former partner as a paedophile, rapist, and drug-addled domestic abuser.
The court heard how Nicholson terrorised the innocent couple between February 2023 and June 2024 with fabricated evidence and wild accusations that saw both victims arrested on numerous occasions. Her campaign included sending letters to the man's neighbours falsely branding him a 'dirty nonce', with a similar distressing letter sent to his 80-year-old mother.
Deceptive Police Reports and Fabricated Evidence
Nicholson's harassment escalated with at least 15 false statements to police and multiple deceptive 999 calls. In one February 2023 incident, she anonymously posed as a neighbour claiming a domestic attack was occurring at her ex's home with children screaming and Nicholson supposedly running from the property covered in blood. Police attended to find no disturbance whatsoever.
On February 26, 2023, Nicholson made another 999 call pretending to be terrified while addressing her ex, falsely claiming he had raped her and was threatening her with a hammer while on drugs. Police investigation revealed the call hadn't originated from his address, and they found him home alone with his children.
Relentless Campaign of Legal Manipulation
The psychological torment continued as Nicholson successfully manipulated the family court into issuing a non-molestation order against her ex. She then made false harassment allegations against both victims, resulting in the man being arrested for threats to kill after she fabricated threatening messages from his account. Digital forensics later revealed the messages had been created using Nicholson's own IP address.
Throughout 2023, the victims faced repeated arrests based on Nicholson's lies - the man was arrested for breaching the non-molestation order in May, both were arrested for harassment in June, and the man faced additional stalking charges later that month. Nicholson even created an email address in her ex's name and falsely claimed he had harassed her on a dating app.
Devastating Impact on Victims' Lives
In a powerful victim impact statement, the man revealed the profound consequences of Nicholson's actions: 'Her attempts to ruin my life have had a lasting detrimental effect. I was in constant fear of being arrested after another false allegation.' He described having to move house, take time off work, and deal with social services after being falsely branded a paedophile.
The emotional toll became overwhelming: 'It got so bad I even thought about suicide.' The strain ultimately caused his new relationship to collapse, with both victims suffering separately from Nicholson's relentless campaign.
New Partner's Harrowing Experience
The woman, who had never met or spoken to Nicholson, read her own victim statement in court, becoming visibly upset as she described the ordeal. She believes Nicholson was motivated by 'heartache and jealousy' in her mission to destroy their lives.
'You have taken it upon yourself to destroy people's lives in a hellbent and reckless manner,' she told the court. 'I've had thousands of messages from you. It was a relentless campaign against me.'
The woman revealed how Nicholson created a Plenty of Fish dating profile pretending to be her, leading to a stranger approaching her in the street claiming to have spoken to her on the app. 'This sickens me,' she said. 'I'm truly dumbfounded you wanted to make me feel so unsafe.'
The psychological damage was severe: 'My stress and anxiety got unbelievably bad. I became a prisoner in my own home.' She lost her job due to the mental health impact and described having to intervene when her partner became suicidal in Tynemouth following Nicholson's relentless torture.
Abuse of Justice System Resources
The woman highlighted how Nicholson's actions wasted precious police resources: 'This is all time the police could've spent looking into real crimes, taking resources away from the criminal justice system. You used every service available to you to inflict harm upon us.'
She spent six months on police bail without a single piece of evidence found against her because, as she stated, 'there was none to find.' The experience represented 'the most stressful, unrelenting period of my life. Day after day, month after month.'
Legal Outcome and Mitigating Factors
Nicholson pleaded guilty to sending a letter with intent to cause distress or anxiety and doing acts tending or intended to pervert the course of justice. She received a 25-month prison sentence and a 10-year restraining order.
Defence lawyer Fiona Lamb presented character references speaking well of Nicholson and noted her mental health issues including PTSD and bipolar disorder. Lamb added that Nicholson would be vulnerable to bullying and exploitation in prison.
The case highlights the devastating impact of false allegations and psychological abuse, demonstrating how systematic harassment can manipulate legal systems and destroy lives while consuming valuable police resources that could address genuine crimes.
