Hundreds of terrified spring breakers fled a crowded beach in Florida after hearing loud noises that were initially mistaken for gunfire, according to viral social media footage. The incident, which occurred at Daytona Beach on Saturday, March 14, captured the chaotic moment when beachgoers scattered in panic, screaming and running for safety.
Harmless Noise Sparks Widespread Fear
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood clarified on Monday, March 16, that the sounds were actually harmless, resulting from people crushing water bottles. "There were zero gunshots on the beach," Chitwood stated, addressing the confusion after the video gained widespread attention online. The footage, uploaded to platforms like TikTok, shows a mass exodus from the shoreline, with many abandoning their belongings in the rush.
Separate Shootings Reported Nearby
Despite the false alarm, authorities confirmed that four separate shootings did occur in the Daytona Beach area over the weekend, though none were linked to the beach panic. According to reports, one shooting happened after a fight at a nearby bar on Friday, with no injuries reported. An hour later, another incident occurred outside a Crunch Fitness facility, resulting in one person being shot. Additionally, two more shootings were reported beachside on Saturday.
Police are currently investigating whether any of these shootings are directly connected to spring break activities. Over the weekend, law enforcement made 80 arrests and seized six weapons in Daytona Beach, highlighting the heightened tensions during the busy holiday period.
