A Greek national has been charged with assisting foreign spies, believed to be Iranian, in targeting a journalist based in the United Kingdom. Ioannis Aidinidis, aged 46 and residing in Munich, Germany, was formally charged on Friday under the National Security Act, following an investigation conducted by Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) London, according to Scotland Yard.
Details of the Allegations
The Metropolitan Police have stated that the allegations involve the targeting of a UK-based journalist who works for the television station Iran International. Aidinidis is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court today. He was arrested on May 16 in the West Sussex area by CTP officers from London and the South East.
Police Statement
Commander Helen Flanagan, head of CTP London, addressed concerns arising from the case: 'We understand that this development may cause worry for many individuals in the UK, especially those employed in Persian-language media. We are collaborating closely with various organisations and individuals to offer guidance and support regarding their safety and security. This includes the specific person and organisation linked to this investigation. Anyone with safety concerns should contact their local police force for further advice and support.'
Police have indicated that there is no perceived wider threat to the public. The targeted journalist works for Iran International, a Persian-language news outlet that maintains studios in London.
