Influencer Arrested for Allegedly Staging Kidnapping to Gain Followers
Influencer Arrested for Staging Kidnapping to Boost Followers

An influencer has been arrested in Brazil over allegations that she orchestrated her own kidnapping in a brazen attempt to boost her online follower count and secure widespread media coverage.

Details of the Alleged Staged Kidnapping

Monniky Fraga, aged 27, initially claimed that she and her husband, Lucas, were ambushed by three armed men outside their home in Igarassu, Brazil, in April of last year. She described the incident to her more than 48,000 followers as a terrifying ordeal, stating in a video that the gang threatened torture unless a ransom was paid and that Lucas was assaulted during the handover of their belongings.

The couple reported being dragged to a wooded area, held for several hours, and only released after cash was delivered. However, police investigations have now revealed a different story, suggesting the kidnapping was entirely fabricated.

Police Investigation and Arrest

In a dawn raid, thirty police officers arrested Fraga as part of an operation dubbed 'Smokescreen of Likes'. Detective Cley Anderson told local media that the investigation uncovered indications the alleged kidnap-for-ransom was nothing more than a plot between Fraga and one of the perpetrators.

"The investigation suggests she not only knew about it, but agreed things in advance and stayed in contact with one of those involved afterwards," Detective Anderson stated. Three other individuals, in addition to Fraga, are believed to have participated in the fake kidnapping.

Husband Unaware of the Plot

In a bizarre twist, Fraga's husband, Lucas, who was reportedly beaten, robbed, and kidnapped during the incident, was completely unaware of the staging. Detective Anderson confirmed, "At all times, he has maintained that he genuinely believed it was a real kidnapping."

This adds a layer of complexity to the case, as Lucas was a victim of the alleged crime without any knowledge of its fraudulent nature.

Legal Proceedings and Defense

Fraga's lawyers have requested her release from custody, arguing for house arrest on the grounds that she has young children. She continues to maintain her innocence, insisting that the kidnapping was genuine.

Despite her claims, she is expected to face serious charges, including blackmail, perverting the course of justice, and wasting police time. In her original online video, Fraga emotionally recounted, "I spent hours in the woods. I didn’t know if I’d make it back. There was a river there, and the whole time I thought they were going to kill me and throw me in here, and I’d never see anyone again."

She added, "All I could think about was my children. They beat up Lucas. They were after some gold chains I had posted about. And I said, ‘Those gold chains weren’t mine’."

The case highlights the extreme lengths some individuals may go to in pursuit of social media fame, raising questions about the impact of influencer culture on real-world actions and legal consequences.
