An 18-year-old high school senior was shot and killed at a gas station in Memphis, Tennessee, just hours after attending his prom, according to police reports. The tragic incident occurred around 1:30 a.m., with the victim, LaDainian Cathey, pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Suspect Arrested and Charged with First-Degree Murder
The Memphis Police Department announced on Tuesday that a 17-year-old suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting. The suspect faces charges of first-degree murder and perpetration of a robbery. Authorities noted that two suspects were seen fleeing the scene in a black Mercedes, but details about the second individual have not been made public.
Heartbreaking Tributes from Family and Friends
Hours before the shooting, Cathey's mother, Lakeisha Johnson, posted photos on Facebook showing her son wearing a tuxedo and sunglasses for his prom. Following his death, she shared a heartfelt tribute, describing him as her "best friend" and expressing her struggle to cope with the loss. "I'm trying so hard to be strong... that was my baby now all I have is memories this can't be real," she wrote.
Jaylon Dodson, a friend of Cathey, revealed that the teen was set to graduate next month. Dodson, who works as a barber, cut Cathey's hair the night before the prom and recalled him visiting the barber shop to show off his tuxedo. "He walked out smiling, ready to get in his Benz and have a good day," Dodson told Action 5 News, adding that the sudden death "still doesn't feel real."
School Community Offers Support Amid Grief
Southaven High School, where Cathey was a 12th-grade student, acknowledged his death in an email to families. The school offered counseling and mental health support for grieving students, stating, "It is with great sorrow that we inform you of the loss of one of our 12th-grade students. Our school counselors and mental health therapists will be on campus tomorrow to offer support and services." The message emphasized ongoing support for the school community in the coming weeks.
The shooting has left the Memphis community in shock, highlighting the senseless violence that cut short a young life on what should have been a celebratory night. As investigations continue, friends and family remember Cathey as a vibrant individual with a promising future ahead.
