The body of a United States soldier who went missing near a cliff during a training exercise in Cap Draa, Morocco, has been recovered, the US Army confirmed on Sunday.
Recovery Operation
Moroccan search teams located the remains on Saturday in the water, within one mile (1.6 kilometres) of the location where the soldier was last seen on 2 May, according to an official army statement.
The soldier has been identified as 1st Lieutenant Kendrick Lamont Key Jr, a platoon leader serving in an artillery unit. A second soldier remains unaccounted for, and search operations are ongoing, the army added.
African Lion Exercise
The US service members were taking part in African Lion, the US Africa Command’s premier joint military exercise involving US forces, Nato allies, and African partner nations. The largest component of the exercise is held in Morocco, with approximately 5,000 personnel from more than 40 countries participating, according to Africom.
The exercise, now in its 22nd edition, includes a range of training scenarios such as detainee evacuation operations, as seen in recent photographs from Agadir.
