A former Manchester secondary school teacher has been sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison for grooming and sexually abusing two teenage pupils. Rebecca Joynes, 30, was found guilty in May of six counts of sexual activity with a child, two while in a position of trust.
The court heard that Joynes groomed both boys from the age of 15. While on bail for sexual activity with the first victim, Boy A, she began a sexual relationship with Boy B, later giving birth to his child.
In a victim impact statement, Boy B described being “coerced, controlled, manipulated, sexually abused, and mentally abused”. He said the aftermath was “a very dark time” and that the abuse “tore my family apart”.
Sentencing Joynes at Manchester Crown Court, Judge Cornell said: “There is a breathtaking arrogance in your conduct. You were the adult, the person in control, who should have known better.”
Joynes was also placed on the sex offenders register for life, given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 10 years, and a restraining order in relation to both boys.
