A two-year-old girl has tragically died after being left inside a van in northwest Spain, as her father inadvertently failed to drop her off at nursery. The incident occurred in Brion, a town in the province of A Coruña within the autonomous community of Galicia.
Details of the Incident
According to local police, the toddler was exposed to dangerously high temperatures, with the mercury reaching 25 degrees Celsius. The father, who had earlier taken his older child to school, reportedly became distracted by a phone call and forgot to make the second drop-off. He then proceeded to work, unaware that his daughter remained in the vehicle.
The 29-month-old child spent several hours inside the van before her mother raised the alarm when she went to pick her up from nursery in the afternoon and could not find her. The child was rushed to the Bertamirans Urgent Care Centre in cardiac arrest, where medics attempted resuscitation for 20 minutes, but she could not be saved. The preliminary cause of death is severe dehydration and heat stroke.
Investigation and Support
The Civil Guard has launched a full investigation into the tragedy. Officers from the Santiago Territorial Judicial Police Team are leading the inquiry to clarify the circumstances surrounding the event. Additionally, members of the Psychological Intervention Group in Catastrophes and Emergencies (GIPCE) have been deployed to provide specialized support to the grieving family.
Community Mourning
The death has sent shockwaves through the small community of Brión. In response, the Town Hall has declared two days of official mourning—Thursday and Friday—and has called on all residents to gather in the town square on Friday at noon for a minute of silence.
Broader Context
According to the charity Kids and Car Safety, a child's body overheats three to five times faster than an adult body. In the United States, approximately 40 children die each year in hot vehicles, equating to one death every nine days. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles, even for short periods.
