UK passport holders are being urged to take just one minute to check their passport expiry date before travelling, a simple task that could save significant time, effort, and money in the long run.
Why the Check Matters
HM Passport Office (HMPO), the sole issuer of UK passports for British citizens, issued an alert on X (formerly Twitter) reminding anyone with a holiday booked to verify their passport's validity. The office stated: "If you’re travelling soon, take a minute to check your passport expiry date. If you need to renew, you can apply online." A graphic accompanying the alert added: "Check your passport is valid before travel."
Different countries have varying entry requirements, and an invalid passport can result in being turned away at the airport.
Passport Validity Rules
Passports issued after 2018 are valid for exactly 10 years. However, for passports issued before September 2018, the validity period can extend up to 10 years and nine months. This is because the passport office previously transferred up to nine additional months from an expiring passport onto the new one.
As a result, some individuals hold passports that are technically still valid for international travel. The notable exception is travel to Europe, where passports must have been issued within the last 10 years.
Schengen Zone Requirements
For journeys to the Schengen Zone, your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before your departure date and must be valid for at least three months after your planned return date. Additionally, you are now restricted to staying in Schengen countries for a maximum of 90 days within any six-month period. Prior to Brexit, there were no such time limitations.
HMPO advises all travellers to check their passport well in advance of their trip to avoid any last-minute issues.
