UK to Criminalise Ticket Toutting for Euro 2028 to Protect Fans
UK to Criminalise Ticket Toutting for Euro 2028

The UK Government has announced plans to criminalise the unauthorised reselling of tickets for major events, including the Euro 2028 football championship, in a bid to protect fans from exploitative touts. This move is part of a broader strategy to position the United Kingdom as a premier host nation for international sporting events.

New Sporting Framework

A new sporting framework is currently under development, with the government actively considering bids for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the 2040s, as well as other significant championships. The crackdown on ticket touting aims to ensure that more tickets are sold to fans at face value, building on a similar bill already passed by the Scottish Parliament for Euro 2028.

Government's Ambition

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy emphasised the government's ambition to attract prestigious events, highlighting their economic and social benefits. However, there are concerns that the ban might not be included in the upcoming King's Speech. The legislation is intended to combat exploitative practices and safeguard fans from inflated prices and fraudulent sales.

The initiative follows a Labour minister's recent Taylor Swift-themed message to ticket touts, underscoring the government's commitment to tackling the issue. By making ticket touting a criminal offence, the UK aims to create a fairer and more accessible ticketing system for major sporting and cultural events.
