Pennsylvania Woman Makes Harrowing Escape from Alleged Kidnapping by Ex-Boyfriend

A terrified woman was captured on dramatic footage running for her life after managing to escape her kidnapper in Butler, Pennsylvania, in a shocking incident that unfolded on Saturday afternoon. According to the Butler City Police Department, the unidentified woman was allegedly assaulted and abducted by her ex-boyfriend, 53-year-old Kenneth Clarke, around 2 pm.

Violent Assault and Abduction Details

Police reports indicate that Clarke allegedly hit the woman in the face multiple times, causing her lip ring to rip out. He then proceeded to strangle her so forcefully that the victim stated she began to lose consciousness. The assault continued as Clarke allegedly threw her into a wall, leaving a cut on her ear, before shoving her by her hair into a U-Haul truck and throwing her across the driver's seat.

Once inside the rental vehicle, Clarke drove off while holding a green pair of scissors to her neck, according to officials. The situation escalated quickly, but the woman seized an opportunity to flee shortly after they got on the road.

Dramatic Escape to Safety

At a traffic stop, the woman opened the door and sprinted toward a nearby convenience store, Butler Tobacco and Grocery. She was seen jumping over a pile of snow while wearing only a white t-shirt and black pants, with no shoes on her feet. Her alleged captor, Clarke, ran after her before parking the truck outside the store.

Inside the store, the woman immediately caught the attention of employee Tori Adams, who quickly realized she was in trouble. Adams, a mother who had her child with her at work that day, described her instincts kicking in. "I didn’t realize what was going on. She came in, just started yelling that somebody tried to kidnap her and she got away from him," Adams recalled to WPXI-TV. "She was battered, she was bloody, she didn’t have shoes on, her clothes were ripped up and I just remember thinking she needs protecting. I can’t let this guy get to her."

Confrontation and Employee's Brave Intervention

Clarke, donning a bright yellow t-shirt and baggy pants, angrily entered the store and raced toward the back, yelling. Adams stepped in, yelling back at him. "It was kind of mama bear mode activated and I was like, 'You gotta go'," she said. After getting the woman to safety, Adams informed Clarke that police were on their way and he needed to leave. "He said he was going to call the police and I said I’m already one step ahead of you buddy," Adams added.

Police Chase and Arrest

Clarke fled the shop and led police on a car chase that ended in Cranberry, approximately 35 minutes away. He was arrested and is currently being held in Butler County Jail on a $250,000 bail. Clarke faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault, kidnapping, simple assault, terroristic threats, and strangulation.

Community Response and Aftermath

Since the incident, employees at Butler Tobacco and Grocery have expressed concern for the woman's well-being. Store manager Lisa Albert praised Adams for her quick thinking, telling the outlet: "Anybody who comes in if they need help we try to help them no matter who they are." Albert continued: "Everyone’s asking for updates on her. She’s got many prayers coming out to her. Make sure she’s doing all right."

The dramatic escape highlights both the dangers of domestic violence and the bravery of individuals like Tori Adams who step in to protect others in crisis. The case remains under investigation as Clarke awaits further legal proceedings.
