Mikel Arteta has admitted he has undergone a process of understanding Myles Lewis-Skelly better this season, as the Arsenal teenager faces reduced playing time. The 19-year-old enjoyed a breakout campaign last season but has started only three Premier League matches this term, with his most recent start coming in the win over Fulham.
Lewis-Skelly impressed in Arsenal's Champions League semi-final second leg against Atletico Madrid, but Arteta acknowledged that the youngster was always going to face a reality check. The Arsenal manager said: 'It's been a process of understanding him better, him understanding the standards required when you play or don't play that much.'
Arteta praised Lewis-Skelly's attitude, noting that he has trained well and supported teammates when not selected. However, he added that it is 'surprising' to see the player look so confident and energetic after limited minutes. Lewis-Skelly had earned an England call-up and was tipped for the World Cup, but England boss Thomas Tuchel has indicated he needs more regular football to be considered.
The teenager has spent much of the season behind Piero Hincapie and Riccardo Calafiori in the pecking order at left-back, and his versatility allows him to play in midfield, though competition there is also fierce. Manchester United have been linked with a move for the academy graduate, while fellow Arsenal youngster Ethan Nwaneri had to go on loan in January to secure regular minutes.
