A former supporter of President Donald Trump, who voted for him in 2016, 2020, and 2024, has publicly expressed regret, calling him the "worst president we've ever had" and accusing him of blatant corruption. The caller, identified as Thomas from Hawaii, spoke on CSPAN with host Taylor Popielarz, admitting that he had long believed Trump was "the real deal" despite having doubts about his business background.
Regret and Realization
Thomas explained that his change of heart was not due to a single event but a cumulative process. "It's gotten so blatant now," he said, citing Trump's failure to lower prices on day one and other unfulfilled promises. He described Trump as "a con man, a liar, doesn't keep his promises" and claimed that the president is "in office all for himself and doesn't even try to hide his corruption anymore."
Call for Accountability
When asked about the way forward, Thomas suggested that the best approach is to "slow him down and make him accountable anyway we can." He advocated voting for Democrats to restore balance in the system of checks and balances, even if voters are not enthusiastic about Democratic candidates. "Right now, the only weapon is to vote for as many democrats, whether you like them or not," he said.
Low Approval Ratings
Thomas's comments come amid historically low approval ratings for Trump. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll found that only 21 percent of Americans approve of his handling of inflation. A Fox News poll showed a 28 percent approval rating on inflation, with 72 percent disapproving. Additionally, an Associated Press-NORC Center poll released last month indicated that his approval on the economy dropped from 38 percent in March to 30 percent in April.
Thomas acknowledged that it was difficult to admit his mistake, but he hoped that being open about it might help others. "I know it's hard, it took me a while to be able to say that. Very difficult when you commit yourself to believing in somebody," he added.
