Grealish Fined and Given Points for Lamborghini Offence

Premier League footballer Jack Grealish has been handed a £1,000 fine and six penalty points on his driving licence after his high-value Lamborghini was caught running a red traffic light in Liverpool. The 30-year-old attacking midfielder, currently on loan at Everton from Manchester City, faced prosecution by Merseyside Police following the traffic incident on September 12.

Details of the Traffic Offence

Grealish's distinctive sky blue Lamborghini, valued at approximately £210,000, was captured on camera passing through a traffic signal on the outskirts of Liverpool city centre just after 11.30pm. According to court evidence, the luxury supercar went through the lights 1.4 seconds after they had turned red, with the incident occurring on Leeds Street and Vauxhall Road.

Legal Proceedings and Conviction

The England international was convicted for failing to inform police whether he or another individual was driving the vehicle at the time of the offence. Despite police sending letters to addresses in Manchester and Cheshire—including a £5.6 million property—Grealish did not comply with requests to identify the driver.

In a closed-door hearing last week, Magistrate Paul Farquhar imposed six penalty points on Grealish's licence and ordered him to pay a total of £1,044, comprising a £660 fine, £120 in costs, and a £264 victim surcharge. The charge of running the red light was withdrawn, but the footballer was found guilty of failing to provide driver information.

Football Context and Injury Update

The day after the traffic incident, Grealish played for Everton in a 0-0 Premier League draw against his former club Aston Villa. However, the midfielder recently revealed his season has been ended prematurely by injury, posting an image on Instagram from a hospital bed after surgery for a stress fracture in his foot.

In the caption, Grealish expressed disappointment, stating: 'Didn't want the season to end like this but that's football, gutted.' The £100 million transfer that brought him to Manchester City in 2021 made him the most expensive British player at the time.

Broader Legal Context

Grealish was among 2,101 defendants prosecuted and convicted last week for failing to identify drivers accused of road traffic offences. Magistrates handed out fines ranging from £1 to the maximum penalty of £1,000 in these cases, highlighting the widespread nature of such offences.

Kevin Scott, the safer roads unit manager for Merseyside Police, provided a statement to the court detailing the evidence against Grealish. The footballer did not enter a plea, with the matter dealt with through a single justice procedure on Thursday.
