The National Hockey League and the wider sports community are in profound mourning following the tragic deaths of longtime Minnesota Wild reporter Jessi Pierce and her three children in a devastating weekend house fire.
A Tragic Loss for Hockey and Family
The NHL announced on its official sports website Sunday that Jessi Pierce, aged 37, and her three children were killed Saturday in a house fire in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. Pierce had covered the Minnesota Wild as the correspondent for NHL.com for the past decade, becoming a beloved figure in hockey journalism.
Statements of Grief and Remembrance
In an emotional statement, Bill Price, vice president and editor-in-chief of NHL.com, expressed the collective devastation. "The entire NHL.com team is devastated and heartbroken by the loss of Jessi and her children," Price said. "Jessi's love of her family and hockey was evident in the energy and passion she brought to her work for us. She was an absolute joy to talk to and work with. She will be deeply missed."
The Minnesota Wild also shared their sorrow on social media Sunday, posting: "Jessi was a kind, compassionate person that cared deeply about her family and those around her. She served as an ambassador for the game of hockey during her time covering the Wild and the NHL."
Details of the Fire
Firefighters responded to the house fire early Saturday morning after neighbors called 911, reporting flames visible through the roof. Upon arrival, fire crews discovered an adult, three children, and a dog inside the home, all deceased, according to the White Bear Lake Fire Department. The department did not release the victims' names in its initial statement Saturday, respecting the family's privacy during this difficult time.
Fire Chief Greg Peterson addressed the community, stating: "Our hearts ache for those involved in this tragedy. We ask for the opportunity to allow our community to come together and support one another during this difficult time." The cause of the fire remains under active investigation by authorities.
Jessi Pierce's Legacy in Hockey
Jessi Pierce was a dedicated journalist whose work resonated deeply within Minnesota, a state famously known as the "State of Hockey." Her coverage of the Minnesota Wild, a team with one of the largest fan bases since its inception in 2000, helped bridge the gap between the community and the sport, especially after the departure of the North Stars to Dallas in the early 1990s.
Her passing leaves a significant void in the NHL reporting landscape, remembered not only for her professional contributions but also for her vibrant personality and unwavering commitment to her family.
