The Sydney Roosters have taken the decisive step of standing down club legend Jake Friend until his ongoing court case is fully resolved. The 36-year-old former star, a three-time premiership winner and one of the club's most cherished figures, is currently embroiled in a legal battle that has prompted this significant action by the NRL club.
Legal Allegations and Police Involvement
At the heart of the matter is an apprehended violence order (AVO) taken out by police in 2025 on behalf of Friend's partner. Additionally, law enforcement authorities have charged Friend with resisting a police officer in the execution of duty. These serious allegations have cast a shadow over the former player's post-retirement role within the Roosters organization.
Senior sources within the club have confirmed to Wide World of Sports that Friend is effectively on 'gardening leave' while awaiting the court's decision. His solicitor, Paul McGirr, has indicated that Friend intends to contest the charges vigorously. The case was scheduled for a court appearance on February 2, marking a critical juncture in these legal proceedings.
Friend's Illustrious Career and Current Role
Jake Friend's legacy with the Sydney Roosters is nothing short of legendary. Over a distinguished decade-long career, he made 264 appearances, scoring 27 tries, and was instrumental in securing three premierships in 2013, 2018, and 2019. In recognition of his immense contributions, the Roosters awarded Friend Life Membership in 2023. At the time, he expressed profound gratitude, stating, 'It's an absolute honour to receive this.
