A Mexican matador has been seriously injured after being gored by a bull during a festival in Valencia, Spain. Joselito Adame, 26, suffered a deep wound to his thigh when the animal charged at him during the annual Falles celebrations.
Footage captured the moment the bull's horn pierced the bullfighter's elaborate costume, lifting him several feet into the air and tossing him to the ground. The enraged animal then trampled Adame, who covered his head with his hands in a desperate attempt to protect himself.
Two colleagues managed to distract the bull by waving large yellow and magenta cloths, allowing Adame to roll to safety. Despite his injuries, the matador walked away from the encounter and finished off the bull before receiving medical treatment.
Images from the end of the contest show Adame doffing his hat to the audience as he exits the arena, with a bloodied tear on the left leg of his costume. Official sources say he will need at least three weeks to recover.
Adame, originally from Aguascalientes in central Mexico, has spent most of his career in Spain and southern France. He began as a novillero in 2005 and is now considered one of the sport's biggest names. The Falles festival is a traditional five-day celebration in honour of Saint Anthony.
