AFL legend Jonathan Brown has disclosed the profound impact of being diagnosed with a brain tumour, a revelation that took him by surprise. The three-time premiership winner recently underwent surgery to remove a non-cancerous mass and has now detailed his harrowing experience.
The Moment of Clarity
Brown, 44, recalled the moment he knew he would be fine after the procedure. 'The TV was on in my room, and I saw my beautiful wife Kylie there. I could remember her name, so that was a good start,' he told Fox Sports. 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, or Hot Seat, whatever it's called was on. I got them correct up to the $8000 question and I thought, "Jeez I'm going alright".'
The Journey Begins
The treacherous journey began after his wife urged him to complete a basic health check-up. 'I have so much to be grateful for, starting with Kyles. She's the one that nagged me into it being tested,' Brown said. 'She's got her hashtag now, #naggingwivessavelives.'
Life After Surgery
The 44-year-old now faces restrictions on everyday activities. 'I'm not allowed to drive a car. I'm not allowed to drive the boat out the back. Not allowed to go for a swim,' Brown explained. He even used a fake name, Peter John Sutherland, when admitted to hospital, while his wife chose Britney Sutherland as her next of kin in honour of pop star Britney Spears.
AFL Legacy
Brown was a key figure in the Brisbane Lions' three consecutive premierships from 2001 to 2003 and served as club captain from 2009 to 2012. He also had the honour of presenting the 2025 team with the premiership trophy. Since 2015, he has been a leading member of Fox Sports' footy coverage.
