Eileen Wang, the mayor of Arcadia, California, has resigned from her position and agreed to plead guilty to acting as an illegal agent for the Chinese government, according to federal prosecutors. Wang, who was elected in November 2022 to a five-person city council, was charged in April with one count of acting in the United States as an illegal agent of a foreign government without prior notification to the U.S. attorney general, as required by law.
Allegations and Activities
Prosecutors alleged that Wang operated a news website targeting the Chinese American community, where she shared content favorable to Beijing. One specific instance involved sharing an article that denied allegations of persecution and forced labor of Uyghurs in China's Xinjiang province. Her alleged activities ceased after she took office in December 2022.
Legal Consequences
Wang faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison for the felony charge. She is expected to formally enter her guilty plea in the coming weeks. Her resignation from the city council and mayoral position was announced on Tuesday.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about foreign influence in local U.S. politics. The Department of Justice has emphasized the importance of transparency and compliance with the Foreign Agents Registration Act, which requires individuals acting on behalf of foreign governments to register with the U.S. government.
