Twenty-two British passengers evacuated from the Hantavirus-hit MV Hondius have arrived at Arrowe Park Hospital on Merseyside, the same facility that housed Wuhan evacuees and Diamond Princess survivors six years ago. The coach carrying the Britons reached the hospital on Sunday night, marking a return to the spotlight for the facility that became synonymous with the 2020 Covid crisis.
High-Security Medical Assessment
The 107-metre vessel docked in the Canary Islands this weekend after a voyage that claimed three lives. Health authorities are taking no chances, as the outbreak involves the Andes strain of Hantavirus, a rare version capable of person-to-person transmission. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has ordered the 22 Brits to remain at Arrowe Park for a minimum of 72 hours for tests and medical assessment. Even if cleared, they face a 42-day isolation period at home due to the virus's incubation period of up to eight weeks.
Local Concerns and Official Reassurances
Not everyone is welcoming the move. One local resident cancelled a July hospital appointment, calling the decision "UNSAFE" and citing past Covid exposure. However, hospital boss Janelle Holmes defended the choice, citing the site's "positive" response during the 2020 crisis. She promised that anyone showing symptoms would be moved to a specialist unit immediately. Matthew Patrick, Labour MP for Wirral West, noted that medical experts deemed the Frontis building "ideal for isolating" due to its proximity to the Tropical and Infectious Diseases Unit (TIDU) and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.
Inside the Quarantine Experience
Passengers are staying in the Frontis building, a fenced-off area near the A&E entrance, originally built for medical students. Based on 2020 experiences, residents lived in self-contained staff flats without access to the site's three restaurants. An English teacher who quarantined there after leaving Wuhan described donated books as "rubbish" and noted that many residents turned to video games or binge-watching shows like Peep Show. Food became a focal point, with "banging bacon sandwiches" causing controversy when temporarily removed from the menu. Some residents even ordered alcohol deliveries, with one man receiving crates of beer and wine.
Comparisons to 2020 Quarantine
Elaine Spencer, 60, who quarantined at Arrowe Park after leaving the Diamond Princess, described the experience as "surreal." She recalled arriving at a military airfield, being segregated on coaches, and facing an additional seven-hour wait before entering the facility. Upon leaving, she was struck by the lack of masks and gloves in the outside world, contrasting with the strict protocols inside. The trust running the hospital reassured the public that the risk remains very low, emphasising that Hantavirus is not spread through everyday social contact and that the isolation is a precautionary measure.
