President Joe Biden is expected to nominate Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of former President John F. Kennedy, as the US ambassador to Australia, according to reports on Friday. The 63-year-old former first daughter was a vocal supporter of Biden's campaign and previously served as ambassador to Japan under President Barack Obama.
Kennedy, an attorney, writer and editor, was three years old when her family moved to the White House and five when her father was assassinated. She was the first female US ambassador to Japan and served on Obama's vice presidential search committee that helped select Biden as his running mate in 2008.
If confirmed, Kennedy would be the second member of the Kennedy dynasty nominated to the Biden administration. Victoria Kennedy, the widow of Senator Ted Kennedy, has been asked to serve as ambassador to Austria.
Kennedy has been a gun control advocate and senior counsel at the law firm Greenberg Traurig. She also founded the group Common Sense about Kids and Guns.
