Violent clashes erupted in Southampton on Wednesday as protesters confronted riot police near the site where Henry Nowak was fatally stabbed. Hundreds of demonstrators, including well-known activists Tommy Robinson and Laurence Fox, gathered to voice their anger over the incident and the subsequent police response.
Protest Turns Violent
The demonstration escalated quickly, with protesters chanting "Henry, Henry" and throwing bricks, chairs, cans, and flares at officers. Police in riot gear attempted to control the crowd, leading to chaotic scenes on the streets of Southampton. The unrest follows intense scrutiny over police conduct during the stabbing incident, where officers arrested and handcuffed Mr Nowak as he lay dying, after his killer, Vickrum Digwa, claimed a racist attack.
Political and Family Reactions
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood condemned the violence, accusing demonstrators of "hijacking this tragedy to stir up violence." Her statement echoed the Nowak family's plea against using his death for division. The family has repeatedly called for calm and respect for Henry's memory.
Investigations and Resignations
The National Police Chiefs’ Council announced a review of its anti-racism guidance in light of the incident. Meanwhile, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating the circumstances of Mr Nowak's arrest and death. One officer involved in the incident has resigned, though details remain undisclosed.
The clashes in Southampton highlight the deep tensions surrounding the case, which has drawn national attention and sparked debates over police procedures and racial discrimination.
