Cole Palmer has been left out of England's World Cup squad, with Thomas Tuchel delivering a brutal assessment of the Chelsea star's recent performances. The German manager also omitted Phil Foden, stating that he refuses to select players based solely on their name and reputation.
Tuchel's Harsh Verdict on Palmer
Tuchel explained that Palmer's lack of individual form at club level and his failure to make an impact with England were key factors in the decision. "He suffers from a lack of individual form within the club. He was not as decisive or influential as he was in previous seasons," Tuchel said. "His record with us was just not outstanding, not good enough to make him a guaranteed pick. He pulled out several times due to injury, and when he was in camp, he did not have the impact we wanted."
Tuchel acknowledged the difficulty of the decision but emphasized his commitment to picking players based on merit. "I refuse to bring players for the name and then play them out of position just to give them something. I prefer to make tough decisions beforehand."
Foden Also Misses Out
Regarding Phil Foden, Tuchel noted that the Manchester City star had been excellent in camp but lost momentum in the second half of the season. "It hurt me a lot to call him and tell him this decision. I could see how much it affected him," Tuchel admitted. "He lost momentum in a crucial moment, and I was not even sure what his best position is. It does not make sense to bring players and play them out of position."
Concerns Over Creativity
With Palmer and Foden omitted, England's squad appears short on flair and creativity, raising concerns about who will supply chances for prolific striker Harry Kane. However, Tuchel expressed confidence in midfielders Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson. "I think Elliot and Declan are capable of doing very special things. Reece James can produce special moments from right-back," he added.
England will head to the World Cup with a squad that has been stripped of some of its most skillful players, but Tuchel remains defiant in his approach.
