Doctor Who Christmas Special in Doubt Over Casting
Doctor Who Christmas Special in Doubt Over Casting

The Doctor Who Christmas special scheduled for December 2026 may be cancelled, as the BBC reportedly struggles to find a permanent lead actor to play the 16th Doctor. The show has been in turmoil since Ncuti Gatwa departed at the end of the latest series in May 2025, with former companion Billie Piper stepping in for a single-episode regeneration.

Piper's return was a last-minute decision, and showrunner Russell T Davies wrote a festive episode starring her, intended for release this December. However, sources indicate that the special is now 'hanging in the balance' because producers cannot find an actor willing to take on the full-time role. One source told The Sun: 'The problem is that they have found it difficult to find anyone who’ll take on the part of the 16th Time Lord, partly because it now feels like a role that comes with all the baggage of the most recent series.'

If the special is scrapped, the BBC would instead aim to launch a new series at Easter 2027. The corporation declined to comment on the reports. Last year, BBC chief content officer Kate Phillips insisted that 'Doctor Who is going nowhere', and drama director Lindsay Salt confirmed the BBC's commitment to the show, regardless of its partnership with Disney+.

Piper, who originally played Rose Tyler from 2005 to 2006, expressed her love for the show and the secrecy surrounding her return. She said: 'I have always said I would love to return to the Whoniverse... so to be given the opportunity to step back on that Tardis one more time was just something I couldn’t refuse.' Gatwa described his exit as 'bittersweet', noting the physical and emotional demands of the role.
